Our Story

We are committed to eradicating economic and social inequality in society by generating and disseminating innovative and transformative knowledge. Our goal is to ensure that research is accessible to all by bridging economic theory with actionable
strategies for social change. The Canadian Institute for Research on Economic Justice (CIREJ) is led by the Canadian Center for Women Empowerment (CCFWE). Our members consist of a diverse, interdisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners from Canadian universities across the country. We bring expertise in various areas, including economic justice, gendered violence (such as violence against women and children, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence), intersectionality, and the legal and non-legal regulation of violence. Through collaborative efforts and interdisciplinary approaches, we strive to advance understanding, promote equality, and advocate for policy changes that addres.

Our mission

Our mission is to facilitate innovative interdisciplinary projects that leverage cutting-edge research to shape public policy and cultivate a fair and equitable society in Canada. Drawing on expertise from scholars across various universities, we aim to be a dynamic hub for comprehensive research, insightful analysis, and impactful initiatives in the fields of economic justice and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Our goal is to ensure that research is accessible to all by bridging economic theory with actionable strategies for social change.

Our Vision

Research in the field of economic justice can often feel isolating, with numerous obstacles threatening progress. We envision a world where every individual feels empowered to contribute to the process of knowledge creation for the promotion of economic justice.

Our Values

 Our core values include :

Conducting Economic Justice Research: Conducting rigorous research initiatives focused on economic justice to deepen understanding and address inequalities. We are committed to developing evidence-based strategies aimed at reducing economic abuse and enhancing the well-being of children. Additionally, we strive to equip professionals in the family violence sector with practical and informed tools to effectively address economic injustices.

Knowledge Translation and Dissemination: Translating complex research findings into accessible formats and disseminating them to diverse audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and the general public. We are dedicated to ensuring that our research insights reach those who can enact meaningful change and inform policy decisions

Development of Intervention Models: Creating Canadian operational definition intervention models and framework assessment tools for the Economic Abuse Index. These tools are designed to effectively measure economic abuse and inform intervention strategies aimed at safeguarding individuals and communities from economic exploitation and harm.

Learning Platforms: Building inclusive learning platforms on various topics to facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity-building, and skill development among stakeholders. Our goal is to create spaces where diverse voices can engage in constructive dialogue, share experiences, and foster collaborative learning to advance economic justice.

Convening Economic Abuse Summit: Organizing national Economic Abuse Summits and conferences focused on addressing economic abuse. These gatherings serve as crucial platforms for fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and driving collective action toward addressing this critical issue. By bringing together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and advocates, we aim to catalyze efforts to combat economic injustices and promote equitable outcomes for all.
